Een ongestilde honger: The Hunger Games

Het fenomeen van 'brood en spelen' kruipt en sluipt er niet onbewust in. Schrijfster Suzanne Collins wist het gegeven te kaderen: "The fictional nation in the film is called Panem. This is derived from 'Panem et Circenses',

or 'Bread and Circuses', which comes from the latter days of the Roman Empire, in which the government would keep the masses satisfied not by performing their public services well, but by providing violent and deadly entertainments for the people to watch, which is rather fitting for the subject matter of the film."
Inhoudsgewijs verwacht je even roodspattende druppels door extreme situaties en haast castrerende confrontaties zoals het bloeddorstige Battle Royale. Hollywood kiest natuurlijk voor de softversie. De gruwelen worden geschuwd en ingeruild voor zachtaardige overlevingsmomenten. Een beetje te melig met een iets te schone perceptie. Het tienerpubliek smulde er alvast van. Terwijl Sutherland de ouwe getrouwe speelt en opnieuw een plaats in het acteurspantheon wil verwerven, is het eerder Woody Harrelson die met een voor hem ingetogen vertolking veel terechte aandacht naar zich toetrekt.
